Abdelkader leads Vikes past Mustangs to take over top spot
The Diablo Valley College Women's Basketball team defeaeted San Joaquin Delta College on Thusday night, 67-62.
The game was a battle from the very beginning and DVC had the lead at half time, 35-31.
The Mustangs came out strong to start the second half, and were beating the Vikes 46-45 at the end of the 3 quarters.
Despite being out shot (42.6% vs. 33.3% FG%), out shot beyond the arch (31.3% vs. 26.9%) and out rebounded (53-32), the Vikings controlled the ball (29 DC turnovers vs. 8 DVC turnovers), which seemed to be the difference in the game.
The Vikings were led offensively and defensively by Daisha Abdelkader, who scored 29 points and 4 steals, which were a huge part of the scrappy defense DVC played all night long.
The Mustangs held leading scorer, Zahria Hendrix to just 4 points, but the Vikes are deep and currently have 5 other players averaging double digit points per game. Despite the low scoring game, Hendrix led the Vikes on the boards with 13.
Sierra Smith also had a great game offensively for the Vikes, scoring 17 points and Jahnay Anderson hit 3 three's for the Vikings.
The ultimate team win puts the Vikings in sole posession of 1st place and with just 2 games left, could be the icing on the cake for the Vikes on another Big 8 Conference Championship.
