Vikings thwart D-1 Sierra Nevada College Eagles
The Vikings came into last Saturday night; to avenge last year's last minute loss to the Sierra Nevada College (SNC) Eagles. The Eagles, last year trailed by two goals with just over two minutes left in the game, scored a quick goal, won the face off, scored another quick goal, won the faceoff and scored the dagger with 11 seconds remaining.
This year was a different story however as the Vikings bolted to a 6-0 lead before SNC scored just before the first quarter ended to make it 6-1. The Vikings continued the assault to a 9-3 lead at the end of the half. The third quarter however was all Eagles, as they found their groove and outscored the Vikings 5-1 making it 10-8 Vikings, but with the momentum clearly in the Eagles nest.
Ryan Dickson quickly ripped a goal to being the fourth, followed by Navarro, another by R. Dickson, two by Jason Madden, and suddenly the Vikings held a commanding lead of 15-8 with only minutes remaining. The teams exchanged goals over the final three minutes ending with a Vikings victory 16-9.
The win, over yet another D-1 program propelled the Vikings to an overall record of 4-2 against the six D-1 teams they have faced this season. The ultimate test is up next taking on Cal, last year's #2 team in the nation, who held the #1 position for most of the year until falling to South Carolina in the finals.
Game time is 6:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium at UC Berkeley on Wednesday, 10/23. If you can't make the game, follow live updates on twitter @vikinglacrosse
