WBB | Alexander's 25 paces the Vikes past Sierra
Julia Alexander scores 25 points, 4 of 6 from three, 9 of 10 from the free throw line to lead the Vikes past Sierra, 89-74.
The number three team in the state, Diablo Valley, got off to a slow start Friday night against Sierra, getting into early foul trouble and playing disjointed offensively before finally pulling away in the 2nd half to beat the Wolverines 89-74.
The Vikings were trailing 18-10 at the 13:28 mark in the first half. Enter Julia Alexander.
After falling into a quick deficit to start the game, Alexander came off the bench to light up the crowd and the scoreboard with two 3-pointers to put the Vikings on top for the first time, 24-23 with 6:40 remaining in the half. Alexander went on to hit her 3rd and 4th 3-pointers of the 1st half to give the Vikings a little cushion.
Trailing 40-33 at halftime, the Wolverines were able to claw their way back into the game, going on a 7-0 run to begin the 2nd frame to tie the game at 40-40. The Vikings continued to take it inside the Sierra defense, going to the free throw line 49 times, hitting 33 of them.
DVC would make it a 9 point lead with 4:45 remaining and wouldn't look back from there.
Julia Alexander led the way with 25 points. Sabrea Coleman shrugged off a rough shooting night from distance to tally 19 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals. Jophiea Irvin added 16 points.
Sierra was led by sophomore point guard Ashley Jenkins, scoring 22 points. Aaliyah Monroe and Selena Lopez added 10 points.
The Vikings travel to the state capital to face American River College on Tuesday, January 13th.
The Vikings return home next Friday night, January 16th to face another tough Big 8 Conference foe in San Joaquin Delta College.
