WBB | Balanced offense vaults Vikes to 15 straight
Eight Vikings score at least 8 points as DVC continues their dream season with an 87-44 victory over American River.
PLEASANT HILL -- Diablo Valley's leading scorer and playmaker on the night had 12 points and 6 assists, Sabrea Coleman, while seven of her teammates pitched in for at least 8 points each en route to an 87-44 win over American River on Friday night to give the Vikings their 15th straight victory, winning 19 of their last 20 games. The depth and balance of this year's roster has been extraordinary to watch. Ten of the eleven players that received playing time recorded at least 5 shot attempts, but not a single player eclipsed 9 shot attempts. This team is a primary case study of true hoops equity.
Julia Alexander led the bench unit in points with 11, hitting 3 of 5 from long-distance. Keke Scott played lockdown defense, racking up 4 steals and many more pass deflections to go along with her 10 points, 6 assists, and 4 rebounds. Soraya Page added 10 points. Jophiea Irvin and Kayla Taylor each had 9 points. Taiyla Jackson and Raeona Ford contributed 8 points a piece.
Before conference play started in January, head coach Ramaundo Vaughn spoke to the team's balance, "[The balance] is something that just happens. This year it just happened and it's an organic thing. It's not something we try to do, but everybody contributes, and that's the great thing about it." Diablo Valley hasn't lost a game since December 12th.
DVC is receiving meaningful production from the majority of their roster on a nightly basis and it's what makes them one of the favorites to take home a state title for the first time in school history.
The Vikings hit the road this Tuesday night as they visit San Joaquin Delta College in a highly-anticipated rematch of the January 16th game in Pleasant Hill that saw this shot from Raeona Ford win the game at the buzzer to vault the Vikings atop the Big 8 Conference. Delta will look to reclaim atleast a share of the Big 8 Conference lead. The Mustangs haven't lost a game since their visit to Pleasant Hill, blowing out their last six opponents by an average of 30 points per game.
The Vikings return home on February 17th for their last home game before postseason play as they take on Santa Rosa Junior College for a 5:30 PM tipoff.
