VIKINGS SOFTBALL STAYS HOT
The DVC softball team made it four wins in a row with a sweep of Folsom Lake in Big 8 Conference play on Saturday.
The Vikings (10-5, 4-4) prevailed 6-2 and 8-0 against Folsom Lake.
In the 8-0 triumph, DVC rapped out 14 hits as right fielder Ciara Whitesell was 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI, and shortstop Marissa Maddox was 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBI. Winning pitcher Sita Manoa allowed three hits over five innings, and was also 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Terri Taylor and Madeline Cervantes each had doubles.
The Vikings broke open the 6-2 win with five runs in the bottom of the second. Maddox wound up 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Olivia Soley went seven innings for the pitching win, allowing five hits and two earned runs.
DVC will host Modesto (3-4, 5-11) at 3 p.m. on Tuesday in Big 8 play, and then will travel to Cosumnes River (15-5, 4-3) for a doubleheader on Friday.
TRACK AND FIELD
The Vikings are excited about competing in a big meet at College of Sequoias this weekend.
“Should turn out some great marks,” DVC coach Kyle Whitmore said in a text message.
BASEBALL
The Vikings (6-15, 1-5) dropped four straight games last week in the powerful Big 8.
In a 13-10 defeat against Modesto March 9 at Pirate Field, leadoff Frank Panacci was 3 for 5 with a double and two runs scored. Tyler Toland and Liam Knowles both had three hits and three RBIs, and Ricky Pato was 4 for 5 with three runs scored.
The Vikings will face American River (11-8, 0-3) three times this week, including a home date at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
SWIMMING
The Vikings fared well against Southern California power Pasadena City as the Vikings’ Logan Killion took first in a competitive men’s 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:05.63. DVC’s Mirelle Augst prevailed in the women’s 200 back in 2:28.10.
August also cruised to victory in the 1,650 free in 19:49.29, as did Killion in the men’s 1,650 in 17:32.66.
DVC standout Jamie Wanket was first in the women’s 50 free by nearly a second in 25.56 seconds. She also prevailed in the 100 free in 56.37. DVC’s Kristen Black led a 1-2-3 Vikings sweep in the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:23.94.
In the men’s 500 free, DVC’s Bang Kai Chao was first in 5:11.01.
The Vikings are excited to be competing in the Big 8 Invitational this week, when big marks are expected.
