DVC Swimming - 1st Day Results
The Diablo Valley College men's team got off to a sensational start in Thursday's first day of the CCCAA Swimming and Diving State Championship at East Los Angeles College.
The Vikings' 200 freestyle relay of Brandon James, Jake Frigard, Garrett Middleton and Drew Pitcher took first place in a meet-record time of 1 minute, 21.52 seconds. They shattered the old mark by more than two tenths of a second.
"They all swam really well," DVC coach Rick Millington said. "Truly a team effort."
Pitcher also took third in the men's 50 freestyle (20.54), with what Millington described as a "huge swim."
Unfortunately, the DVC men's 400 medley relay team was disqualified because it was ruled that the third swimmer left the blocks early. Last year, DVC set a meet record in the event
Friday's second day promises to be another blockbuster day for the Vikings. James will be defending his 100 backstroke title. He set a meet record in the event last year with a time of 47.90. The Vikings' men should also figure prominently in Friday's 200 medley relay, entering with the No. 2 time behind Golden West
On Saturday, James will defend his 200 backstroke title, an event in which he set a national community college record last year of 1:44.95.
