DVC Vikings Launch 2025 Season with Dominant Performance against Diablo
Diablo Valley College (DVC) lacrosse kicked off their 2025 season with an impressive victory against a newly formed local Men's Club team, Diablo. An exciting element of Diablo is that it consisted of many former Vikings. The game marked a strong start for the Vikings, showcasing both veteran leadership and emerging talent.
Game Highlights
- Initial Slow Start: DVC faced early challenges, going scoreless on their first three possessions.
- Diablo Strikes First: The Diablo club team opened the scoring, signaling a competitive match.
- Former Vikings Shine: The game provided a chance to see former DVC players still competing at a high level. Juan Buenrostro, a former DVC player who also played with Team Mexico in the 2010 Lacrosse World Championship, took control of the offense, scoring 6 goals and demonstrating his experience and skill. In addition, former Vikings Gio Rico and Devon Bahari each scored two goals for the visiting Diablo Men’s Club.
- Bryson Henefer’s Power Play: DVC capitalized on a non-releasable man-up opportunity, adding two goals, including a powerful blast from 20 yards by Bryson.
- Oli Burke Earns Game Ball: Oli's exceptional performance earned him the game ball. The long pole midfielder made multiple takeaways, displayed relentless hustle, and scored his second career goal after a remarkable dodge.
- Abigail Chung. Abigail is the second woman to play the sport of “Men’s Lacrosse” for the Vikings, has a goal of playing NCAA Division 1 Women’s Lacrosse, and very quickly into the season has earned great respect among her coaches and teammates, not only by scoring a goal and having two assists in her first game with the Vikings, but with her commitment and energy during practice.
- Team Effort: DVC's collective effort was highlighted by D-Mid Landon Vergara's 50-yard assist, showcasing the team's commitment on both ends of the field.
Looking Ahead
Despite the victory, the DVC Vikings acknowledge the upcoming challenge on Sunday, September 28th at 6:00 p.m. at Viking Field against Sonoma State. The Seawolves finished strong last year in the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) standings, suggesting a serious test for the Vikings. Sonoma State's history of having great lacrosse teams and winning two MCLA National Championships will present obvious challenges and growth opportunities for the Vikings. At the same time, the DVC lacrosse team is known for never bowing to an opponent and is eager to go toe-to-toe with the best lacrosse teams on the west coast.
