
DVC MEN HUNGRY FOR MORE
The DVC men's basketball team got its mojo back with a 55-50 win over Sierra Jan. 13, handing the Wolverines their first Big 8 defeat. Rodney Pope led the Vikings with 19 points and James Tanner drained three 3-pointers and had 11 points.
DVC will head to Sacramento City on Tuesday and will host Cosumnes River Friday, both games at 5:30 p.m.
The Vikings (14-5, 2-2) are two games behind first-place Santa Rosa (13-5, 4-0 Big 8) and one back of Sierra (8-10, 3-1) in the balanced Big 8. DVC is in a four-team logjam in third place with American River, Sacramento City and San Joaquin Delta.
Sacramento City is coming off an 86-71 loss to San Joaquin Delta, when it was outscored 46-25 in the second half. Sacramento City was led by Bret Lynch (17 points) and Alex Tsverov (15 points, seven rebounds). Michael Wadsworth had 11 points and nine rebounds.
DVC's two opponents this week met on Jan.10, when Sac City beat Cosumnes River 70-61.
Leondre Lintz leads Cosumes River averaging 14.1 points a game.
Women's basketball
DVC (16-4, 3-1) expects to rebound strongly after a very competitive 78-75 loss to Sierra (16-2, 3-1), leaving the two powerhouses tied for first in the Big 8.
Doris Jones, who is averaging 18.4 points a game, led DVC with 19 points to go with seven assists and four rebounds. Safiyyah Yasin, averaging 16.2 points a game, had 18 points. Samarah Oliver and Deja Johnson-Ford both had 10 points for DVC.
This week, the Vikings are at Sacramento City (9-9, 2-2) on Tuesday, a team coming off a 30-point loss to Delta.
Cosumnes River is riding a three-game losing streak, and Daija Ward had a team-high 14 points in a 69-43 loss to ARC on Jan. 13.
