
DVC Vikings Athletic Year in Review
The 2017-2018 Vikings Athletic seasons have come to an end | Here is the Viking Athletic Year in Review
Track & Field finished the season with 14 athletes competing at the State Track & Field meet in Bakersfield. Jack Pickard finished 4th in the Javelin Throw, Kevin Orellana finished 12th in the 10,000m run, and Jeff Williams finished 4th in the Discus and 9th in the Shot Put. Tashayla Gilmer finished in 6th place in the 100m Dash and the Women’s 4x100m relay (Jayla Jones, Tashayla Gilmer, Maria Winder, & Victoria Benson) finished in 5th place. The Men’s 4x100m relay (Mousawer Safi, Jzelun Johnson, Phillip Gernert, & Isaiah Turner) finished in 3rd place and the 4x400m Relay (Auchavian Brewer, Alex King, Vy Nguyen, & Jzelun Johnson) finished in 7th place.
Swimming’s Women finished 3rd and the Men finished 4th at the CCCAA State Championship meet. The Vikings had 3 individual state champion races; Bang Kai Chao in the 100 & 200 Breaststroke and Anita Alvarez in the 400 Individual Medley, almost setting the state record.
Softball finished the season with a 25-17 record over all and 15-9 in conference play, qualifying for the CCCAA State Regional for the 4th consecutive year. The Vikes finished in 4th place in the Big 8 Conference and had three 1st Team All-Conference selections; Sita Manoa 1st Team Pitcher, Elvia Alvarado 1st Team Catcher, and Julianna Pichardo 1st Team Infield.
Baseball finished the season in 8th place in the Big 8 and recorded a 14-25 record over all. The Vikes had three players recognized by the Big 8 Conference, Jared Bannister was named 1st Team Utility, Jordan Williams was named 1st Team Infield, and Rob Towne was named 2nd Team Pitcher.
Men’s Tennis finished the season with a 2-4 record in the Big 8 and 2-8 overall. Bryant Taylor and Angelo Cardenas qualified for the Doubles State Tournament in Ojai, Ca. The Women’s team finished with an 0-5 record in Conference play and 0-6 overall. Danielle Powers finished in the Big 8 North Conference Tournament Round of 16 and Nicole Powers finished in the Round of 32.
Men’s Basketball finished their season with a record of 15-13 and tied for 4th place in the Big 8 Conference with Sierra & Cosumnes River. The Vikes had three players recognized by the Big 8 Conference (Ben Wood, Victor Mijas, and Demarre Walker) and four plan on attending Cal State East Bay (Ben Wood and Steven Daily) and Humboldt (Victor Mijas and John Dong) to play at the next level.
Women’s Basketball finished the season with a record of 22-4. Doris Jones, who has recently committed to the University of Houston, was named Big 8 Conference MVP, CCCAA 1st Team All-State, and Northern California Player of the Year. Head Coach Ramaundo Vaughn was named 2018's Big 8 Conference Head Coach of the Year. Under his reign, the Vikes recorded 15 conference wins and finished tied for 1st place with Sierra College. The Vikings were the #6 seed in the CCCAA NorCal Bracket and finished their season in the NorCal Regional Final.
Women’s Soccer received the #9 seed in the CCCAA Norcal Regional Playoffs. They played the #8 seed Cañada College, where they lost in penalty kicks. Megan Melara was named to the Big 8 All-Conference Team, United Soccer Coaches All- West 1st Team and All-America 2nd team. Noelle Lemos was named to the Big 8 All-Conference Team. Women’s Soccer finished the season with a record of 11-5-5.
Football advanced to the Gridiron Bowl at Modesto Junior College. They had 8 players named to the NCFC All-Conference Team: Corey Cox, Josh Ramirez, Jason Dickson, Sean Vaisima, Cam Norfleet, Tui Pulu, Miles Harrison, and Corey Luciano. They finished the season ranked #24 in Northern California and their record was 5-6.
Men’s & Women’s Cross Country teams had one of the best seasons in recent years, with both teams qualifying to run at the State Championship Meet. The Men’s team won the Big 8 Conference Championship, placed 4th in Northern California and 12th at the State Championships. Conference and State accolades for the Vikings included: Kevin Orellana - Big 8 Individual Champion and CCCAA All-State Honorable Mention, Luis Ramirez and Jordan Bandtell - 1st Team All-Conference, Parker Shields and Sayed Opeyany both 2nd Team All-Conference, and Jessica Mendez 2nd Team All-Conference.
Women’s Volleyball battled in the Big 8 Conference this season with a couple notable wins over Cosumnes River College and Santa Rosa Junior College. They finished the season with a record of 7-18.
Women’s Water Polo finished the season at the Big 8 Conference Championship Tournament in Stockton where they placed 6th overall. Their final record was 8-14.
Men’s Water Polo had a great season and finished at the Big 8 Conference Championship Tournament in Stockton where they took 2nd overall. The Vikings defeated Delta for the first time in their 4 meetings this season in the Conference Semi-Final game to advance to the championship game. Their final record was11-14.
Men’s Lacrosse finished the club season with a record of 11-7.
