Wet weather can't cool Vikings
A little rain wasn't going to bother the Diablo Valley track and field team at the Merritt Invitational.
The Vikings men's squad continued to churn out personal records.
Nigel Burnett, a Las Lomas High graduate, stormed to a PR of 22.42 seconds and finished sixth overall in the 200 meters, and Nathan Noble of Heritage had a PR of 22.74, for 10th overall.
Isaiah Mobley of Making Waves finished third overall in the 400 with a PR of 49.12, the ninth-best mark in school history. Geoff Weseman, a West High graduate in his first full year of track and field, remained unbeaten in the 800 with a time of 1:55.05, and Keith Lowrey of Deer Valley was second in the 5,000 with a PR of 16:12.27.
Harrison Kwong of Dougherty Valley was second in the triple jump with a PR of 13.05 meters.
In women's action, Angelina DazaSanchez of Alhambra was fifth in the 800 in a PR of 2:26.69. Katherine Embody was fifth overall in the 1,500 in a season best of 5:05.87.
Brandy Williams of Deer Valley, a two-sport star at DVC, was first overall in the shot put with a throw of 12.18 meters.
SOFTBALL
The Vikings (22-8-1, 6-6) will look to make a final big push in the Big 8 race, beginning at home against Sierra (23-8, 8-4) on Tuesday.
Nicole Nordahl, the state pitching leader in strikeouts, struck out 12 and walked none in a 6-1 win over Modesto (4-24, 0-12) on April 5. Nordahl improved to 22-8 on the season. Leadoff Juliana Deighton was 3 for 4, and Ciara Whitesell had two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs.
Mallory Barnard and Laurel Poff both had two hits, and Nordahl had a a double.
The Vikings will travel to powerful conference-leading Sacramento City (23-5-1, 11-1) for a doubleheader on Thursday. DVC will host Santa Rosa in a doubleheader on Friday, beginning at noon.
SWIMMING
The Vikings flexed some muscle in the Pasadena Invitational, breaking two meet records in an event that annually brings out the state's top talent.
The DVC men's 200 free relay eclipsed the mark with a time of 1:23.72, and state champion Brandon James bested his own meet record in the 100 backstroke with a 49.64.
BASEBALL
Freshman catcher Adam Remotto led the Vikings with a .329 batting average entering the week. He also topped the squad in on-base percentage at .396 and doubles with seven.
TENNIS
The No. 3 seeded Vikings men's team will travel to No. 2 Foothill on Tuesday in the semifinals of the CCCAA Dual Team Tennis Regional Tournament.
DVC beat No. 6 Fresno City 5-2 in the quarterfinals in Pleasant Hill. The Vikings freshman doubles team of Garrett Goldman and Mariano Salvador earned their seventh straight win, defeating the Rams' No. 1 team 8-4. Sophomores Marvic Domingo and Ricky Leung also prevailed at No. 3 doubles 8-4.
The Vikings sealed the victory with singles wins by No. 6 Max Tsukonov 6-4, 6-4, No. 4 Eric Lofquist 6-3, 6-0 and No. 3 Salvador 6-1, 6-0.
