Keeping up with the Vikings for the week of 3/21
DVC sprinter Strangenae Campbell set a school record in the women's 100 meters with a runner-up time of 11.74 seconds at the first annual Sequoia Relays at the Mineral Bowl in Visalia.
The mark puts Campbell, a former Pinole Valley High star, at No. 2 in the state behind 100 winner Moesha Davis of Fresno City (11.61).
The Vikings' Tia Harper (Deer Valley) was first in the 400 with a personal best of 59.70, and Katherine Embody (Castro Valley), a standout on the DVC cross country team, was second overall in the 1,500 in a season best of 5:06.14.
The women's 4x400 relay team of Harper, Campbell, Jordan Hinds and Kennedy Wade was first overall in 4:01.05.
In her first meet after an outstanding basketball season, Brandy Williams (Deer Valley) was first in the shot put at 40 feet, 2.75 inches.
In men's action, Lionel White was sixth in the 100 in a personal best of 10.88, and Latrell Thayer was seventh in the 200 in a season best of 22.17.
Ryan Hoffman (Campolindo) was fifth In the 400 with a personal best of 49.06. Kohlden Hotchhaus (Las Lomas) was third in the 800 in a personal best of 1:59.28.
Keith Lowry (Deer Valley), coming off an excellent cross country season, was second in the 5,000 (16:31.22).
FOOTBALL
DVC freshman offensive tackle Rangel Lowry (Freedom), a 4.0 student, signed with Murray State and stands to be a three-year starter with the Racers.
Lowry, a psychology major, likes the fit at Murray State, rated by Forbes Magazine as having one of the top 15 psychology programs in the country, DVC coach Mike Darr said.
Recently, Vikings safety Kyle Trego (Liberty) signed with Colorado in the Pac-12. Trego turned down offers from Division II schools and Air Force last year.
An All-State selection, Trego had a first game for the ages at DVC with an interception, fumble recovery and two blocked kicks.
SWIMMING
DVC hosted the Big 8 Invitational last week, and the Vikings delivered some typically impressive swims.
The men's 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays took first place with the same four swimmers:Brandon James, Garrett Middleton, Drew Pitcher and Jacob Frigard. James had four first-place finishes overall, also taking the 100 butterfly in 50.94 and 100 freestyle on 45.81.
Frigard was first in the 50 freestyle (21.12), and Giovanni Hernandez was first in the 200 butterfly (1:58.06), and Kirill Parshin was first in the 500 freestyle (4:50.89).
In women's action, Malia Dillon (25.41) and Christine Nip (25.62) went one-two in the 50 freestyle, and the 200 medley relay was second, with a team of Alyssa Jenkins, Nip, Beverly Ayers andDillon.
Melody Pope and Mirelle Augst were second and third in the 200 freestyle, and Augst and Jenkins were second and third in the 100 backstroke.
TENNIS
The DVC men hammered Solano 9-0 on March 15 without dropping a set, improving to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the Big 8.
Garrett Goldman, Austin Miller, Maksim Tsukonov, Angelo Cardenas, Daichi Ozawa and Sam Anderson swept the singles contests.
The DVC women dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker against Sierra to fall to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the Big 8. Seila Besirovic prevailed at No. 2 singles, but No. 1 Kristina Lencesova fell in a three-set battle 2-6, 7-5, 6-4. Danielle Powers won at No. 3 6-2, 6-0, but the Vikings dropped the Nos. 4-6 matches.
Lencesova Besirovic won at No. 1 doubles 8-4 and Powers and Monique Paris prevailed at No. 2 doubles.
BASEBALL
The Vikings (10-9, 0-4) got off to a rough start in the powerful Big 8 with four straight losses. They dropped three in a row to Santa Rosa and then fell 4-1 to American River on March 19.
They will look to turn it around at home against ARC on Tuesday and Thursday.
SOFTBALL
The Vikings rebounded from a 5-0 loss to Sacramento City in their Big 8 opener on March 15 with three straight wins.
DVC swept host Modesto 7-0 and 10-4 on March 17, and then Nicole Nordahl tossed a one-hitter in a 1-0 win over Sierra in the first game of a doubleheader, with seven strikeouts and two walks. Mallory Barnard was 2 for 3 with the game's only RBI. Bailey Simmons was also 2 for 3.
But in the second game of the doubleheader, DVC managed three hits off Sierra pitcher Taylor Ebner. Nordahl took a rare loss, allowing six hits and two earned runs.
In the 10-4 win over Modesto, Barnard was 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, giving her five hits for the day, and Julia Pelletier slugged a home run.
