Bio
Michael Chisar, MPT, ATC
Mike has been working at DVC since the fall of 1994. He has served in a number of roles including Head Athletic Trainer, Assistant Athletic Trainer, Department Chair, Assistant Professor, Sports Medicine/Athletic Training Program Lead He created and then taught most of the sports medicine courses between 1995 and 2023, He is currently the Sports Medicine Program Manager overseeing the clinical sports medicine program as well as the liaison between the clinical and academic programs.
Mike is a certified athletic trainer and physical therapist. He completed his accredited athletic training program receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in physical education with an emphasis in athletic training in 1984 from California State University, Fullerton. He then completed his Master in Physical Therapy Degree from Hahnemann University (now Drexel University) in Philadelphia in 1994.
Prior to his time at DVC Mike was the assistant athletic trainer at St. Mary’s College in Moraga and has worked in a number of in-patient and orthopedic physical therapy settings. He has worked with professional athletes from a variety of sports and beyond his DVC teaching responsibilities, has also taught sports medicine courses as part of the
Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Samuel Merritt College. Mike was a chief athletic trainer at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta (track and women’s soccer) and has spent time working at the US Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. He also served as the Head Athletic Trainer for the University of California Ice Hockey Team for a dozen years and the San Francisco Dragons Professional Lacrosse team for the three years of their existence. Mike has been very active in national and state athletic training organizations including spending 15 years leading legislative activities and helping pass athletic training and athlete safety legislation. He has also been published in several professional journals and made numerous presentations at professional symposia throughout the world.
