DVC gives Santa Rosa its 1st non-victory
Diablo Valley breaks up Santa Rosa's Perfect Season with a tie.
The Diablo Valley College women's soccer team didn't get the goals it wanted, but the result was impressive -- a 0-0 draw against unbeaten Santa Rosa on Friday in the teams' Big 8 Conference openers.
Santa Rosa (7-0-1) had outscored its first seven opponents a combined 35-1, but the Vikings (3-1-3) held tough. They received strong efforts from goalkeepers Sammi Hebing and Katie McGlaughlin, and the back line held up well playing without injured defender and captain Dominique Calloway.
Megan Coppa and Daissy Lozano gave a clutch efforts at left back, and the other three defenders, right back Andrea Weinstein and center backs Deiziana Dargan and Katelyn Cunningham, held down the fort against a dangerous attacking team.
"Keeping them scoreless was a good result," DVC coach Cailin Mullins said. "They definitely have some very talented players in the attack, and we did a pretty good of shutting them down and reducing their opportunities and making it tough for them to get good looks at the goal."
Hebing made a couple of nice saves in the first half, and McGlaughlin made a huge save in the second half to deny a breakaway opportunity.
"Katie just got her feet out of the way, her hands down to the ball so quick," Mullins said of McLaughlin's handiwork. "I thought the kid was gonna score, and Katie just did such a quick little move to get behind the ball. It was a great save."
Mullins said once the Vikings break through and start scoring more goals they will be among the elite teams.
