DVC SPORTS ROUNDUP
BASEBALL
DVC (6-11, 1-2) scored three in the top of the eighth inning to earn a come-from-behind 3-2 win over host San Joaquin Delta on March 4. The Vikings snapped a four-game losing streak and handed Delta (15-2, 2-1) its first Big 8 loss.
Right fielder Ricky Pato, who was 3 for 5, and catcher Jared Bannister had RBI doubles in the eighth, and left fielder Drew Downing singled home Bannister with what proved to be the winning run.
Reliever Nate Jenkins (2-2) allowed no runs over the final innings to get the win. Starter Riley Moore allowed three hits and no runs over 4.0 innings with three strikeouts and three walks.
The Vikings will begin a busy week at home against Modesto in the Big 8 on Tuesday. They will host De Anza on Wednesday, travel to Modesto on Thursday and host Modesto on Saturday.
SOFTBALL
The DVC softball team dropped a doubleheader against powerful Sierra on Saturday, 3-2 and 9-7, to fall to 2-3 in the Big 8 and 5-4 overall. The visiting Vikings led in both games but couldn’t hold on.
In the 9-7 loss to Sierra (15-3, 4-1), the Vikings scored seven times in the top of the fourth to take a 7-5 lead, but Sierra answered with four in the fifth. DVC spread the wealth on offense as seven different players each scored once. Olivia Soley was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI. Soley also took the loss in relief of Sita Manoa, allowing five earned runs and seven hits over three innings.
In the 3-2 defeat, DVC scored two in the third to take a 2-1 lead, but Sierra scored two in the bottom of the sixth off Soley, the tough-luck loser who allowed just two earned runs and struck out five over six innings. Leadoff Elvia Alvarado paced the Vikings going 2 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI.
The losses followed a doubleheader sweep of De Anza on March 2, 29-9 and 13-2, and an 8-5 loss to Sacramento in the Big 8 on Feb. 28.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
