Strangenae Campbell wins state title!!!!
DVC freshman Strangenae Campbell breezed to the women's 100-meter title in a fast time of 11.44 seconds in the CCCAA Track and Field State Championships at San Diego Mesa College.
Campbell also finished second in the 200 in 23.78, just behind winner Najia Hudspeth of Cerritos (23.69).
The Vikings placed eighth in the women's team standings with 30.33 points -- a massive improvement over the previous season when they finished last in the NorCal meet.
"It's just unreal," coach Kyle Whitmore said proudly. "We probably were ahead of a lot of our local counterparts, or all of them. ... And the men were 11th. We were fourth in the relay and third in the relay. Like I said all year, this team was a team this year, just well-rounded."
Whitmore said Campbell was "confident" with her race plan in the 100.
"She knew that if she executed that things would probably go favorably," he said. "About 30 meters into the race there was a look on her face that we haven't seen all year. Right then we knew that she was gonna win it."
Brandy Williams was second in the women's shot put with a best of 14.07 meters.
"Brandy, once again, did everything she could do for the team," Whitmore said. "The Cerritos girl (shot put winner Destiny Mack-Talalemotu) was just tough."
On the men's side, freshman Geoffrey Weseman placed fourth in men's 800 in 1:54.11.
"He ran big," Whitmore said of Weseman, in his first full year of track. "He beat a bunch of guys that beat him all year. He just did what we thought he could do."
In the women's high jump, DVC's Juliette Alliaume was seventh and Petrice Beattie tied for eighth.
The DVC women were seventh in the 4x400 relay in 4:00.19. The DVC men were fourth in the 4x100 relay in 41.39, and the DVC women were ninth in the 4x100 relay in 49.77.

"This was just a team (effort), and I couldn't be happier with everyone," Whitmore said.
Campbell, who also swept the 100 and 200 titles in the NorCal meet, has had a remarkable season. She entered the state meet tied for second in the country in the 100 with a best of 11.22.
