Tennis team shows skills early in the season
The Diablo Valley College men's tennis team is off to an excellent start this season.
The deep Vikings showed resolve en route to a third-place finish in the 42nd annual Modesto Junior College Invitational last week, after sweeping both Cabrillo and Chabot 9-0 in matches.
The DVC women's tennis team fell 6-3 against Chabot, but Kristine Lencesova prevailed at No. 1 singles over Melissa Young 6-2, 6-0, and the No. 1 doubles team of Lencesova and Seila Besirovic won their match 8-6.
In the MJC tournament, all six DVC players were seeded in the top four of their flights, and five won their first two matches to advance to the semifinals.
The Vikings' No. 1 singles player, Garrett Goldman, ranked fourth in the tourney, advanced to the semifinals before falling to Sean Alves of Folsom Lake 4-6, 6-4, 7-6.
No. 2 Austin Miller lost in the semifinals against Seppi Capual of American River 6-2, 6-4. No. 3 Mariano Salvador beat Joseph Greco of Foothill in the semifinals, and then lost to top seed Alex Meliuk of ARC 6-1, 6-2.
No. 4 Ricky Leung rebounded from a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Jensen Pawid of Chabot in the first round to win three matches and take the Flight 4 Consolation Bracket.
No. 5 Eric Lofquist fell to Euan Rajanthiran 7-5, 7-6 (10-8) in the semifinals. No. 6 Maksim Tsukonov also lost in the semifinals against Ryan Lam (Foothill) 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
In doubles, No. 1 Goldman/Salvador advanced to the finals before bowing out because of injury default. No. 2 Miller/Lofquist lost to Duong/Silva (ARC) 7-5, 6-4 in the semifinals. No. 3 Leung/Domingo also lost in the semifinals to Strabo/Rajanthiran (Foothill) 6-4, 6-0.
