No. 19 Football Rebounds with Upset of No. 13 Diablo Valley

Pleasant Hill, Calif. - Four different Roadrunners scored as the 19th-ranked Butte football team rebounded with a 28-14 upset of No. 13 Diablo Valley on Friday evening.

Sophomore quarterback Tanner Hughes threw a pair and ran in a touchdown, while sophomores wide receiver (and reigning NCFC National Offensive Player of the Week) Jailen Hammer and tight end Zach Woodall each tallied a reception for a score. Freshman running back Deremy Stubbs tallied his first career touchdown.

The Roadrunners chalked up a touchdown in each quarter of the game. Butte jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead behind Hammer's 10-yard connection from Hughes before Woodall showcased his hands, holding on to a touchdown pass, good for 14 yards, and outlasting his defender. In Stubbs' three rushing attempts, he made one count for 18 yards in the third before Hughes added an insurance score with 7:47 remaining in the game.

On the day, Hughes went 10-for-15 for 103 yards, while adding another 50 yards in rush attempts. Sophomore Caleb Ramseur added 77 yards with a long of 29, while Hammer finished the day with three receptions for 40 yards.

Sophomore linebacker Elijah O'Neal paced the Butte defense with seven tackles, including four solo, a pair of sacks for 20 yards, and three total tackles for loss. Freshman defensive back Spencer Osborn counted the team's lone pick, stopping a Viking drive in the end zone for a touchback with three tackles on the day. Sophomore linebacker Grant Garretson tallied four solo tackles - one for loss for three yards.

Butte (1-1) returns home to host No. 1 San Francisco on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. Hall of Fame festivities are taking place around the contest beginning with the induction ceremony on Friday, Sept. 16 and inductee recognition at halftime of the contest.
