DVC starts off Conference Play with two consecutive wins.
Diablo Valley College wideout Nick West caught two touchdown passes and made a fashion statement in the Vikings' 52-13 romp over Foothill Friday night at Viking Stadium.
After realizing he forgot to pack his team socks for the Bay 6 Conference game, the Liberty High graduate improvised, borrowing a pink pair from a female friend.
"I was short socks," West said with a grin. "I was looking at my bag. It had nothing in it. Hey, go-to. … It might be my lucky attire."
So it was easy to spot the dashing West as the Vikings improved to 4-3 overall and a 2-0 in the Bay 6.
Accurate DVC quarterback Drew Anderson, who fired five touchdown passes to improve his state-leading total to 28, spotted West too. His 11-yard scoring pass to West gave the Vikings a 35-0 lead in the first half, and the same duo hooked up on an electrifying 65-yard touchdown play on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter.
The convincing win against the Owls (0-7, 0-2) wasn't unexpected, but it gave the Vikings a chance to sharpen their edge with their three biggest conference tests looming, at City College of San Francisco (5-1, 1-0) on Oct. 31, against College of San Mateo (4-2, 0-1) on Nov. 6 at Viking Stadium, and at Santa Rosa (4-2, 1-0) on Nov. 14.
"We've got our three probably toughest games coming up," Anderson said. "So I think we're getting stronger every week, especially as an offense, and I can see it on the defense too. But as an offense we're getting stronger every week and starting to roll. I think we'll be ready, but it will be a good test for us."
The Vikings defense looked good for the second straight week, coming off a 33-0 win over De Anza in their conference opener. They had about nine quarterback sacks and applied steady pressure overall.
State receiving leader CJ Cornwell rounded out the scoring on a 4-yard pass from Anderson, and Marcus Armstrong-Brown and Dominic Paoletti each had touchdown grabs.
A former three-sport star at Miramonte, Anderson even ran one in himself on a 1-yard carry. D'Amora Cooper also had a 3-yard touchdown run. The Vikings' only blemish on offense was a lost fumble during mop-up time.
"I think we had a good game plan and we executed well," Anderson said. "We had a clean game."
In the first quarter, Kory Lamberts, who was all over the field making plays, had an interception and Steven O'Brien and JR Martin had sacks.
Thompson Pulu set up the Vikings' third touchdown with a fumble recovery on the Owls' 38-yard line. Anderson promptly completed a 28-yard pass to Armstrong-Brown to set up Amora's touchdown run.
Lamberts had a sack on the Owls' next possession and a tackle on third down to force a punt. After the Vikings increased the lead to 28-0, Franklin Uesi and Quinton Casey had sacks on Foothill's next possession as the defense kept teeing off.
The makeshift offensive line fared well, and Anderson was on his game.
"He's the best quarterback I've ever played with, yeah, definitely," West said. "He's really smart, so his pre-snap reads are really good, really instinctual, and on top of that he's a great passer. … His smarts is his strong suit."
Anderson's 40-yard completion to Paoletti on a well-executed post pattern for the game's first touchdown seemed to snap the Vikings into a nice rhythm.
"We had that empty package and it's been pretty tough to stop for a lot of teams so far," Anderson said of the play to Paoletti.
The Vikings' improving run game spearheaded by Cooper, a sophomore out of Freedom, has been big, because it's helped keep the pressure off Anderson.
"I thought we did a great job of being able to run the ball even when they knew it's coming, to kind of run out the clock," Anderson said. "It was good to see."
