Bio

Coach Darr came to DVC in 2003, became the defensive coordinator in 2005 and then head coach in 2007. He has been coaching at the community college level in a variety of roles for over 25 years. Along with his head coaching duties, Coach Darr is the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach as well.  Prior to coaching at DVC, he spent six seasons at Los Medanos College in Pittsburg, CA.  At both schools, the defenses he coached were perennially ranked in the top 10 in the state; even garnering the #1 spot in the 1998, 2005, 2011 & 2013 seasons.  Darr's defenses are often considered one of the most aggressive scheme in community college football.  The defenses' that Coach Darr has coached at DVC have at one time or another led the state in yards per game, sacks, turnovers and points scored.  They have virtually re-written the record books!

Off the field, Coach Darr has matriculated over 300 student-athletes to the next level. Coach Darr has helped secure scholarships at an incredible rate, averaging more scholarships (20+ per year) than any other Northern California program during his time-frame. The development of Viking players as intelligent, focused and accountable student-athletes makes DVC a premier recruiting ground for 4-year institutions from across the country. The Pac-12, Mountain West and WAC programs have offered scholarships to multiple Viking players.  Viking student-athletes have also transferred to powerhouse schools such as Alabama, LSU, Missouri, Auburn, Florida State, just to name a few.  Coach Darr’s Student-Athlete Success Program has made DVC the leader among mid-year transfers; this allows his players the opportunity to compete in spring football scrimmages at the next level.

DVC has collected multiple Academic All-State selections during Coach Darr's tenure.  Coach Darr is adamant about his belief that excellence is not just a gameday goal, but an everyday expression of one’s character.  This belief has been the driving force behind DVC’s unmatched community service history.  Viking players have tutored disadvantaged youth with the creation of a student-athlete reading program with local elementary schools.  Coach Darr and his players have also refurbished foster homes for abused teens; one of the many activities that contribute to the development of Viking players as intelligent, focused and accountable student-athletes.

Coach Darr is a graduate of Clayton Valley High School, where he competed as a four-sport athlete in football, basketball, baseball and track.  Coach Darr is also a DVC alumni, playing Safety as a two-year starter.  During his sophomore campaign, Darr was an All-Conference selection and the defensive team captain of the undefeated 1989 Vikings team that was recently inducted into DVC's Athletic Hall of Fame.  Coach Darr's bout with cancer as a sophomore in high school and his hard-nosed play led his teammates to vote him the team's Most Inspirational Player.  Upon graduating from DVC, Coach Darr transferred to Sacramento State, before finished his playing career at Chico State, where he was an Academic All-American.

Coach Darr received his A.A. from Diablo Valley College, his B.A. from Chico State University and his M.A. from Saint Mary's College of California in Moraga.  He resides in Concord with his wife Laura and two children, Haley (15) and Tyler (12).
