College of San Mateo begins official defense of its Bay 6 League football title Friday evening at Diablo Valley College (3-2) in Pleasant Hill at 7 p.m.
San Mateo completed non-league play with a 4-1 record and ranked No. 4 in the state (second in Northern California). DVC is No. 14 in the state coaches poll. conducted by the JC Athletic Bureau. The Vikings have a new, but well known, coach in Jimmy Collins, who previously guided City College of San Francisco to a state title.
San Mateo, coached by Tim Tulloch, posted the best non-league record in the Bay 6 and has a 2-game winning streak – the only B6 team that did not lose its last non-conference game. State No. 19 ranked Foothill is 3-1 and will be CSM's next home foe, on Oct. 26. The October schedule is, therefore, crucial for the reigning Northern California champion Bulldogs. .
CSM knocked off formerly unbeaten Fresno City College, 14-7, in the last non-league contest, dropping the Rams from No. 3 to No. 9 in the state poll. The Bulldogs took care of defending NorCal League champion and still state No. 13 American River College, 17-14, the previous week.
San Mateo brought up previous "grayshirt" quarterback Dominic Ingrassia for the ARC game -- after two previous signal callers were sidelined with injuries. Ingrassia has thrown for 217 yards, completing 18 of 32 passes -- with a collegiate efficiency rating of 111.0. In directing the pair of win, he has also run for 60 yards -- for a total offense of 277 yards.
TOP B6 RUSHER: CSM running back Lolo Mataele leads Bay 6 rushers with 417 yards in five games. He is the co-National Division state leader with six rushing touchdowns (best overall in NorCal) and has 442 total all-purpose yards. Hassan Mahasin is San Mateo's most versatile back, with a league leading 236 return yards and 155 yards rushing contributing to his 460 all-purpose total. He had a "collegiate record" equaling game opening 100-yard kickoff return against Modesto.
DVC has the leading passer in the Bay 6 in sophomore Teddy Booras, who has thrown for 1,115 yards and a pacesetting ten touchdowns with a 144.8 efficiency rating. Ferrari Miller paces Diablo rushers with 315 net yards and three TDs.
STATE'S BEST KICKING GAME: San Mateo has, arguably, the state's best kicking game, with Dieter Kelly having made a school-recording equaling 51-yard field goal among his NorCal pacesetting seven field goals (including another at 50 yards) and 29 kicking points. CSM punter Tashi Dorje leads the state after five games with a 42.4 season average.
