DVC VOLLEYBALL WORTH SINGING ABOUT
After DVC's Daisy Manoa started things off by singing the national anthem, the Vikings competed with their usual passion in a thrilling win over Folsom Lake on Friday in the Big 8.
Jasmine Assia amassed 34 assists and 10 digs as the Vikings rebounded from a two-game losing streak with a 3-2 win.
The scores were 25-22, 15-25, 17-25, 25-22, 15-9.
With help from Assia’s deft sets, Jade Lee paced the Vikings with 17 kills, and Cailey Rocquemore and Isabel Villalobos had 10 kills apiece. Taylor Chow had a team-high 12 digs and Rocquemore had 10 digs.
The victory puts DVC (8-7, 4-4) and Folsom Lake (13-6, 4-4) in a tie for fifth place in the super-powerful Big 8.
On Wednesday, the Vikings fell to San Joaquin Delta 25-15, 25-21, 25-16. Lee had 12 kills and Assia had 15 assists.
This week, DVC will host American River on Wednesday and Cosumnes River on Friday.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
The Vikings, ranked No. 3 in the JC Division III National Poll, suffered their first loss of the season in a 2-1 cliffhanger at Santa Rosa in a Big 8 showdown.
The defeat followed a 13-game unbeaten streak for the Vikings (10-1-3, 5-1-3).
The Vikings, who upended the defending Big 8 champion Santa Rosa 2-1 in the teams’ conference openers, came up just short in the rematch. Santa Rosa star Amanda Galbraith scored two goals sandwiched around a goal by DVC’s Noelle Lemos in an entertaining first half. Cameron Chan assisted Lemos’ goal.
Santa Rosa (12-2, 7-2), San Joaquin Delta (11-2-1, 6-2-1) and DVC are in a tight battle for the Big 8 top spot, with Folsom Lake (10-3-1, 5-3-1) not far behind.
The Vikings will host Cosumnes River at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and then will travel to Folsom Lake on Friday. Cosumes River beat Folsom Lake 1-0 on Friday.
FOOTBALL
The Vikings (4-2, 0-1 Big 8) will try to shake off the effects of a 49-7 loss to defending state champion CCSF (4-2, 1-0) this week when they travel to De Anza (1-5, 0-1) Saturday afternoon.
From DVC’s perspective, best thing about the CCSF game is it’s over. The Vikings were penalized 18 times for 202 yards in a penalty-plagued National-Bay 6 opener. The Rams were also hit with 15 penalties for 127 yards.
Dynamic CCSF quarterback Lavelle McCullers set the tone with a 77-yard TD run to start the scoring. Speedy Rams back Namane Modise ran for 137 yards, as CCSF had 377 net yards rushing.
A strong effort against De Anza would put the Vikings back on track toward a possible playoff berth.
Miles Harrison had the Vikings’ lone touchdown on a soggy Friday night, on a 4-yard pass from Jadon Brisendine, who is ranked No. 5 in the state in passing yards per game with 283.2.
Brisendine was 25-for-53 passing against CCSF for 258 yards, with one touchdown and an interception. Friday’s game featured two of the state’s top receivers in Marquese Surrell and CCSF’s Easop Winston. Both had three catches in the showdown.
