CAMPBELL UPENDS NATIONAL SPRINT LEADER
DVC star Strangenae Campbell, a 2011 Pinole Valley High graduate, upset the national leader in the women's 100 meters in the CCCAA Northern Regional Track and Field Finals on Saturday at Chabot.
Campbell's winning time was 11.60 seconds, and Moesha Davidson of Fresno was a close second in 11.61.
Campbell said she was looking forward to facing Davidson, who has a season-best of 11.36, just ahead of Campbell's 11.42.
"I knew she was gonna be a challenge, but I'm up for anything," Campbell said. "I'm not going to give her anything. She's gonna have to work for it if she wants it. It was cool. I liked that race."

In a big day for DVC, Brandy Williams won the women's shot put title with a PR of 45-11.25.
Campbell also breezed to victory in the 200 with a fast time of 23.69, the No. 1 community college mark in the state, and the No. 4 mark nationally.
She was named top female athlete of the meet, also helping the 4x100 and 4x400 relays to runner-up finishes.
The DVC all-freshman women's 4x100 relay of Jordan Hinds, Tia Harper, Victoria Benson and Campbell had a school-record time of 47.63 seconds. Harper was also fourth in the women's 400 (58.33).
"I'm pretty happy with the way I ran today," Campbell said. "I felt slow at first, but it was cool. It was nice. The weather was nice. I felt good."
The DVC men closed the show in third place in the 4x400 relay. The men's 4x100 relay of Latrell Thayer, Austin Harper, Nigel Burnett and Lionel White took second in 41.21.
In another DVC highlight, freshman Geoffrey Weseman ran a huge race in the 800, taking fourth in a PR of 1:52.72. Weseman said he built up to the race, but used the same strategy he's had all season.
"This is probably my best, actually, that was the important thing," Weseman said modestly.
Francisco Hurtado finished third in the 400 hurdles (54.28).
Weseman said his teammates did great, and he was "proud of them."
DVC coach Kyle Whitmore was thrilled that his women's team fared so strongly, finishing sixth a year after finishing last. The DVC men finished 10th.
Campbell said she had an "off start" in the 200, but the race went well for the most part.
How did Campbell wind up at DVC?
"I started at Laney and stuff just wasn't working for me, so I said, 'I'm gonna try it again,'" she said.
She knew Whitmore from high school, so she asked him if he wouldn't mind working with someone who's been out for five years.
"He had patience, he worked with me," she said. "We got through it, and that's how I ended up here. It's been 'on' since. ... I am very excited for state."
She is extra-excited to have the Vikings relay team going with her to Mesa College in San Diego for the May 20-21 state meet. Her relay teams at Pinole Valley didn't make it to state with her.
"It's all overwhelming, but it's so exciting," she said. "I'm just happy to be here. I'm just blessed."
