Vikings hope to Serve and Volley their way to great things
Men's tennis
The Vikings have a strong chance to finish in the top two or three in the Big 8, with American River always the favorite for the top spot.
Sophomore Sean Austin Miller is back after holding down the No. 2 spot last year, and Marvic Domingo is another key returner at No. 3 or 4, after playing No. 4 last season and seconddoubles.
The team is excited to have freshman Garrett Goldman, nicknamed the "Silent Assassin" at East Grand Rapids High in Michigan. Goldman, the Vikings' No. 1 player, redshirted at Davenport University in Michigan last season.
"He has solid strokes, very smart on the court," DVC coach Jackie Ponciano-Babb said of Goldman. "He plans his rallies, and when you least expect it he'll attack."
Evenly matched Mariano Salvador (Monte Vista) and Miller are vying for the No. 2 and No. 3 singles positions.
The Vikings hope to return to the CCCAA regional playoffs this year and be represented again in the state singles and doubles tournament. They lost to Chabot 5-4 in the CCCAA quarterfinals last April.
Women's tennis
The Vikings, who have two returners, are paced by No. 2 Seila Bsirovic (Las Lomas) and No. 1 Kristina Lencesova (Northgate), a solid all-around player who is working on her mental game.
Lencesova practices against the DVC men's players to keep her game sharp. They are hoping she can challenge for the conference singles championship.
