SWEET SOCCER SEASON CONTINUES
DVC AROUND THE HORN
Still unbeaten 11 games into the season, the DVC women’s soccer team amassed 10 goals in two Big 8 road matches last week -- an 8-0 win at Sacramento City and a 2-2 draw at San Joaquin Delta.
DVC (8-0-3, 3-0-3) and Santa Rosa (9-2, 4-2) share the top spot in the conference, each with 12 points.
Noelle Lemos, the Vikings former assistant coach, is coming off a big week on the field. She scored four goals, highlighted by a hat trick against Sacramento. Lemos, who has played in just eight matches with four starts, leads the team in scoring with seven goals.
Erica MacDonald also notched two goals against Sacramento, and Megan Melara had a goal and two assists.
In the cliffhanger with Delta, Lemos scored off a MacDonald assist to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead, but Delta equalized in the 57th minute. Melara scored to give DVC an early lead in the fourth minute.
The Vikings will host Sierra at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, before traveling to American River on Friday.
FOOTBALL
Jadon Brisendine passed for 383 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-21 win over visiting San Joaquin Delta on Friday at Viking Stadium – DVC’s fourth consecutive triumph.
Freshman Miles Harrison, a former Clayton Valley Charter High star, had a breakout game with 133 yards rushing on 13 carries and 74 yards receiving on two catches, with two touchdowns overall.
DVC has now scored more than 40 points in three straight weeks.
Plus, the offensive line will get a boost with the return of Oregon commit John Vaka, a 6-5, 275-pound tackle, for the Oct. 14 showdown with visiting CCSF in the teams’ conference openers. DVC has a bye this week.
CCSF (3-2) is stinging from a 44-7 loss to Butte last week, after staving off Chabot 21-19. DVC beat Chabot 28-14 on Sept. 10.
Coach Mike Darr saw a lot to like in the win over Delta.
"The run game looked good. The pass game looked good," Darr said. "Jadon has really matured well. … Real proud of the guys. They played really well."
The DVC defense was dominant for big stretches. Brenton Allen had a team-high seven total tackles, and an inspired Ville Valasti powered in for two sacks to go with four tackles. Marcus de la Pena had an interception.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Vikings (7-5, 3-2) had a big week by sweeping Santa Rosa 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-17) and Modesto 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-23) in Big 8 play.
Jade Lee had 16 kills against Santa Rosa, hitting at a .458 percentage, and Jasmine Assia had 25 assists. Cailey Rocquemore had 11 digs and Isabel Villalobos had nine digs.
Villalobos had a team-high 15 digs against Modesto, and Lee had 17 kills.
The Vikings, who moved into fifth place in the powerful Big 8, will next host Sierra on Friday, Oct. 7 at 6:30 p.m.
WATER POLO
The DVC men’s team extended its winning streak to three with a clutch 9-7 win at American River on Sept. 28. Max Murphy had a team-high four goals, including a natural hat trick which upped the lead to 6-2.He also had an assist and a steal.
Gordon Kerns had two goals and three steals. Pat Hallahan, Brock Garcia and Ed Sandoval also scored for the Vikings (8-6, 2-1).
The DVC women’s team (4-7, 1-2) fell to American River 11-2.
CROSS COUNTRY
The DVC women’s team took second place in the Modesto Junior College Invitational, led by Ariana Corwin’s seventh-place individual finish. The DVC men were fifth, paced by Ian Rider who finished 14th in the 4-mile event.
In the women’s 5K, Corwin had a time of 20 minutes, 21.3 seconds, and Ella Hymel (11th, 21:01.1), Jessica Mendez (13th, 21:04.5), Angelina DazaSanchez (16th, 21:27.5) and Holly Babcock (32nd, 23:45) rounded out the DVC top five.
Sequoias, with 16 points, was the runaway winner with five of the top six finishers in the women’s race, but DVC was the best of the rest with 69 points.
In the men’s race, Rider was timed in 23:18.6. Rounding out the Vikings’ top five were Ata Ozmen (17th, 22:22.6), Kevin Orellana (19th, 22:24.9), Jules Korman (24th, 22:41.0) and Ben Schoffstall (53rd, 24:00.1).
