VIKINGS RISING IN THE FALL
The DVC women's soccer and volleyball teams are off the outstanding starts.
The soccer squad, fresh off back-to-back shutout wins over Ohlone and Lake Tahoe, has a 5-0 mark heading into its massive Big 8 opener against visiting Santa Rosa (5-0) on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 3:30 p.m. It's safe to expect a few goals in the showdown – DVC has scored 16 times overall, and Santa Rosa has amassed 29 goals, albeit against a softer schedule.
The Vikings thumped Lake Tahoe 4-0 on Sept. 9 as goalkeeper Katie McLaughlin made two saves for her second straight shutout and fourth clean sheet of the season. Freshman Vanessa Ruvalcaba, who had one of the Vikings' three first-half goals, leads the team in points with 10 (4 goals, 2 assists). Cameron Chan had a goal and assist in the first half. Noelle Lemos and Ale Gonzalez also knocked in goals. In a 2-0 win over Ohlone, Karla Ramos scored both goals, and McLaughlin made five saves. Alexandra Rodriguez assisted what proved to be the game-winner in the 27th minute.
Returning standout Jade Lee had a team-high 16 kills against Solano, in a 25-12, 23-25, 18-25, 25-15, 17-15 triumph, and Cailey Rocquemore and Isabel Villalobos each had 11 kills. Jasmine Assia had 28 assists, and Jamie Chow had 16 assists. Against Ohlone, in a 25-18, 21-25, 21-25, 28-26, 15-7 win, Lee powered down 15 kills. Assia had 30 assists, and the versatile Villalobos had 11 digs.
The Vikings will look to keep it rolling at the Solano Classic on Wednesday, Sept. 14 against Siskiyous and City College of San Francisco. All roads lead to the Big 8 opener at American River on Friday, Sept. 16.

Modesto (0-0) on Wednesday, Sept. 14.
Football: The Vikings (1-1) notched a bounce-back 28-14 road win over local rival Chabot on Saturday, Sept. 10. A stout defense and wideout Marquese Surrell (11 receptions, 164 yards, 2 TDs) put on a show.
Freshman quarterback Jadon Brisendine also had a breakout game, completing 26 of 43 passes for 353 yards and three touchdowns. He was intercepted once. Surrell is ranked third in the state averaging 142.5 yards receiving a game, and Brisendine is ranked fourth in passing yards with 301.0 a game. Christian Fuca backed up Surrell with seven catches for 92 yards. Desmond Nisby led all ball carriers with 97 yards on 20 carries, including a 7-yard touchdown. Defensive lineman Dylan Gilfoy had two more sacks and four tackles for loss, and leads the state in sacks with five. Marcus de la Pena had a team-high in total tackles with eight, all solo. Brenton Allen had six total tackles. Gilfoy was among four Vikings with five total tackles apiece, along with Kory Lamberts, Daron Bowles and Marquis Davenport.
Men's/women's Cross country: The Vikings will return to action in the Pat Ryan Invitational in Santa Rosa, a Big 8 Preview Meet, on Friday, Sept. 16.
