Its time for the 2017 CCCAA Basketball Playoffs
PLAYOFF TIME!
The DVC men’s basketball team (20-9), seeded No. 10, will travel to No. 7 Las Positas-Livermore (21-7) Friday to open the CCCAA Northern California playoffs. Tipoff will be at 7 p.m.
The No. 6 seeded DVC women’s basketball team (24-6) will host No. 11 Mission-Santa Clara (19-10) in the first round Saturday night.
MEN
The DVC-Las Positas winner will most likely face No. 2 seed Feather River (23-3) in the second round, and will need a win to advance to the eight-team state finals at Las Positas.
DVC coach Steve Coccimiglio, who earned his landmark 600th career win this season and will be inducted in the CCCMBCA Hall of Fame, says his team is healthy and hopes it will play well against the Hawks, a tough matchup for the Vikings with its pressure defense and push-the-ball style in transition. The Vikings know the Hawks players as local guys, and Coccimiglio is familiar with Hawks coach James Giacomazzi, a two-time Big 8 Coach of the Year.
Coccimiglio was pleased his team rebounded from subpar games against Sacramento City and Cosumnes River to beat Modesto 86-77 in its Big 8 finale, led by Rodney Pope’s 28 points and Victor Mijas’ 27 points. John Dong had five steals.
Pope (Freedom High) and Victor Mijas (Brazil) were all-Big 8 picks, and Jovontae Carelton (El Cerrito) was an honorable mention selection. Kevin Crosno (College Park) made the all-Big 8 academic team.
Balanced Las Positas, paced by Keith Hunter’s 14.2 points a game, finished fourth in the powerful Coast-North. Stokley Chaffee is averaging a double-double in points and rebounds.
WOMEN
The DVC-Mission winner will face either No. 3 CCSF or No. 14 Laney in the next round, needing another win to advance to the state finals at Las Positas.
The Vikings finished tied for second with Delta in the Big 8, both at 11-3 and a game behind Sierra, the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.
DVC walloped Modesto 90-50 in its conference finale as Doris Jones had a triple-double with 18 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds. Dynamic Safiyyah Yasin led the Vikings with 23 points. DVC shot 46.8 percent from the floor and an impressive 52.2 percent from 3-point range.
Yasin also had 20 points in a 65-46 win over Cosumnes River on Feb. 14.
