Led by tournament MVP Jojuan Carrington's 22 points and 18 rebounds, the Diablo Valley women's basketball team beat Big 8 rival San Joaquin Delta 81-67 on Tuesday in the championship game of the San Jose City Tournament.
Brandy Williams, an all-tournament selection, had 19 points and 15 rebounds.
DVC (11-4), riding a five-game winning streak, will travel to Delta (13-3), ranked third in the state, on Tuesday to begin the Big 8 season.
The young Vikings, ranked 17th in the state, had a impressive run in the San Jose tourney, also defeating No. 5 ranked City College of San Francisco 78-74 and No. 8 Fresno City 60-59.
Carrington, a freshman out of Dublin High, had 15 points and 15 rebounds against Fresno on Monday, when the Vikings amassed 49 rebounds as a team.
"It was really just great," said DVC coach Ramaundo Vaughn of the team's board work.
Clearly, the Vikings are hitting their stride at a great time. They showed their mettle and talent against San Francisco Sunday, overcoming a 42-30 halftime deficit.
Williams, a freshman out of Deer Valley, had 16 points and eight rebounds, and Miranda Nelson had a big game off the bench with 16 points.
