DVC women look to three-peat
December 2, 2015
The Diablo Valley College women's basketball team will look to extend its rule in the Contra Costa College Costa Classic.
The Vikings (4-2), top ranked in the Northern California preseason poll, have won the CCC tourney title the previous two seasons.
DVC will open against Napa Valley (1-2) at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
The Vikings are coming off a solid showing at the Ventura/Kiwanis Tournament, in which they defeated Canyons 70-42, fell to state No. 1 Mt. San Antonio College 71-59 and tipped Santa Monica 79-78 in the third-place game.
DVC coach Ramaundo Vaughn described the game against Mt. SAC as even in all but the second quarter. Vikings star Jojuan Carrington, a freshman out of Dublin High, had a team-high seven rebounds against the Mounties.
Mt. SAC also beat a very good Contra Costa (No. 14 in NorCal) 72-61.
The talented Vikings, who have 12 freshmen and three sophomores, figure to improve with more seasoning.
"The team is still growing and learning what it takes to be successful as college players," Vaughn said.
Carrington, averaging 17 points, 9.5 boards and two steals a game, was named to the all-tournament team. She had teams highs of 20 points and 16 rebounds against Santa Monica, and Amani McCrary had 14 points.
DVC beat Laney 78-56 in the championship game of the 2014 CCC Costa Classic.
