CHAO SIZZLES IN BIG 8 SWIM
DVC's Bang Kai Chao had an outstanding meet with three individual victories in the Big 8 Championships last week at San Joaquin Delta in Stockton.
Chao finished tied for first in the thrilling men's 200 IM (1:53.72) with Santa Rosa's Bradley-John Erickson. Chao also cruised to wins in the 400 IM (4:08.31) and in the 200 breast (2:01.65).
On the final day of the meet, DVC's Mirelle Augst blazed to a nearly 10-second win in the women's 1650 free (18:37.32).
In other men's action, Ryan Fowlar was a solid second in the men's 100 fly (51.10). Logan Killion was second in the men's 1650 free, well behind winner Drew Sipple of Santa Rosa. DVC closed the meet with a third in the men's 400 free relay.
In the women's 500 free, DVC's Julia Mes (5:22.66) and Augst (5:24.02) were third and fourth. Jamie Wanket was third in the 50 free (25.06). Wanket was also a close second behind Sierra's Corinne Linke in the 100 free (53.97).
The women's 400 medley relay and 200 medley relay both finished third. DVC women flexed some muscle in the 200 free as Mes finished second in 1:58.48 and Alina Weigelt and Kristen Black were third and fourth. The Vikings also took second in the 800-free relay, and were third in the 400 free relay.
TRACK AND FIELD
In a smashing debut in the event, San Ramon Valley High graduate Christine Bayliss won the women's 10K in 41 minutes, 42.62 in Monday's first day of the Big 8 championships at Sacramento City.
DVC's Ariana Corwin of St. Mary's College Prep-Berkeley was eighth in the 10K.
In the men's javelin, DVC's Jack Pickard was fourth with a mark of 47.38 meters. In the women's discus, Suevanhnia Kuka was fifth at 36.16m.
In the women's long jump, Tashayla Gilmer was third with a personal best of 5.04m.
In the men's long jump Harrison Kwong was third in 6.56m and Jamaal Hicks was fifth in 6.46m.
Action will continue Thursday afternoon in the meet with more field event finals and track finals.
SOFTBALL
The Vikings had a 1-2 record last week against tough competition, falling 5-2 against Cosumnes River and splitting a pair with Coast Conference power Monterey. The Vikings beat Monterey 3-2 in eight innings and fell 5-4 in 10 innings.
The Vikings (22-13, 11-12 Big 8) will complete conference play at American River on Tuesday.
BASEBALL
The Vikings had a solid week by taking two of three against Cosumnes River in the Big 8. The highlight was a four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth for a thrilling 6-5 DVC win on April 20 in Pleasant Hill. Jordan Williams scored the winning run on a wild pitch. Frank Panacci and Jared Bannister (3 for 4, 2 RBI) had RBI singles in the rally, and Drew Downing had an RBI walk. Reliever Tyler Slous worked a spotless ninth and picked up the win.
DVC also beat Cosumnes River 7-0 on April 18 and fell 6-3 on April 22.
In the 7-0 win, Downing had two hits, including a home run, and three RBI. Williams was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI and two runs scored. An amazing total of 10 DVC pitchers combined on the shutout.
