DVC has the need for speed
Diablo Valley College men's swimmers felt the need for speed on Thursday -- the first day of the Big 8 Conference Championships at DVC.
The Vikings took three of the first four spots in the men's 50-yard freestyle final. Drew Pitcher was first in a time of 20.80 seconds. Jacob Frigard finished third (21.07), and Garrett Middleton was fourth (21.14).
The Vikings also won the conference championship in the men's 200 freestyle relay in 1:22.98, with a team of Pitcher, Jeremy Peris, Middleton and Frigard. The 400 medley relay was a close second in 3:24.35, with a team of Brandon James, Giovanni Hernandez, Middleton and Pitcher.
The DVC women's 200 free relay took third in 1:41.22, with a team of Christine Nip, Malia Dillon, Melody Pope and Mirelle Augst.
Augst was third in the 500 freestyle final in 5:21.86. DVC was also third in the women's 400 medley relay (4:09.23), with a team of Alyssa Jenkins, Nip, Beverly Ayers, and Dillon.
The three-day meet will continue on Friday, with trials at 10 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m. Saturday's trials are at 10 a.m., and the finals are at 4 p.
