Bio

Coach Steve Coccimiglio has been Diablo Valley’s men’s basketball head coach since 1990.  During his tenure, he has compiled an overall record of 640-290 heading into this season.  The 1994 State Coach of the Year award winner is the fastest coach to reach 500 wins in California Community College history and he is the winningest coach in school history. Coccimiglio and his coaching staffs have produced nineteen 20-win seasons, and reached the State Final Eight seven times.  He has coached one team to the Final Four and amassed 12 Conference Championships to coincide with his 12 Conference Coach of the Year awards.  Coccimiglio has matriculated well over 130 student-athletes who have gone on to receive scholarships offers to play at the next level.  In addition to his coaching duties, he served as the Chairman for the California Community College Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Association.  He served as the President of the California Community College Coaches Association from 1999-2001. 

Prior to working for DVC, Coccimiglio was an assistant coach for Saint Mary’s College in Moraga.  He was part of the 1988 staff that won the West Coast Conference en route to a 1st round loss to Clemson in the NCAA tournament.  While at Saint Mary’s, he completed his M.A. in Physical Education.

Coccimiglio was hired by De La Salle High School in Concord to be their Varsity Head Coach for the 1981 season; over his seven seasons at De La Salle he compiled an overall record of 101-41, highlighted by winning the Catholic Athletic League Championship in the 1985-1986 season.       

A graduate of Clayton Valley High School, Coccimiglio received a basketball scholarship to play for the University of Hawaii at Hilo.  After his playing career ended in 1977, Coccimiglio joined the coaching ranks at St. Joseph’s High School in Hilo as their Junior Varsity coach.   In 1979, Coccimiglio came home to coach the freshman team at Clayton Valley.  In 1980, he coached the JV squad.

Coccimiglio lives in Martinez, CA with his wife of 35 years, Glenda and they have three children.
