The DVC men’s and women’s basketball teams will be looking for another Big 8 home sweep Tuesday night against Modesto. The men’s game will start at 5:30 p.m., and the women’s game at 7:30 p.m.
The DVC men (15-6, 3-3) are coming off an 82-68 thumping of Cosumnes River Friday in Pleasant Hill, and the DVC women (18-4, 5-1), who share the Big 8 lead with Sierra, also clipped the Hawks 76-63.
Brazilian import Victor Mijas had the Midas Touch in the men’s game, converting 7 of 10 from 3-point range for a career-high 26 points. Sophomore floor leader Rodney Pope (Freedom) had a well-rounded effort with 19 points, seven boards and seven assists. Anthony Buscemi (College Park), a sophomore wing, provided a spark from off the bench with 12 boards and 12 points, converting 6 for 11 from the floor.
The Modesto men's team (4-14, 0-6) is paced by sophomore Josh Allen (18.8 ppg) and freshman guard Jemeil King (17.1 ppg).
On the women’s side, Samarah Oliver led DVC against Cosumnes River with a game-high 27 points and nine rebounds, and Doris Jones had 20 points and nine boards. CC Cuneo stepped up with 16 points and four offensive rebounds. DVC took command with 50 points over the second and third quarters.
The Modesto women (6-9, 1-5) are led offensively by a trio of freshman guards: Rashonne Founts (13.9 ppg), Shealyn Craven (11.2 ppg) and Dayna Hansen (10.9 ppg).
FRIDAY NIGHT SHOWDOWNS: The week appears tilted toward DVC’s men’s and women’s showdowns at San Joaquin Delta.
The DVC women, ranked fourth in the North region, have split games with No. 6 Delta, falling 64-55 in the championship of the San Jose City tourney and besting the Mustangs 74-65 in Big 8 play. Delta is paced by Brittany Butler (16.9 ppg), Daisia Wiliams (12.0 ppg) and Mia Jones (11.4 ppg).
DVC’s Doris Jones is ranked No. 22 in the state in scoring at 18.4 ppg.
The DVC men dropped their Big 8 opener against Delta 69-59, when DVC head coach Steve Coccimiglio was out with the flu bug. Jovontae Carelton (17.7 ppg), Pope (15.0 ppg) and Mijas (13.4 ppg) pace the Vikings offense.
