Vikings slide into Top 25 in the State Coaches Poll
New Chase Pack: San Mateo, Saddleback, Modesto, Fresno, Cerritos:
RIVERSIDE STAYS ATOP CALIF. CC FOOTBALL COACHES POLL
San Mateo (Sept. 23, 2019) – The top team, Riverside City College, remains the same for the first time this season in the weekly poll of California Community College football coaches, conducted by the JC Athletic Bureau. But the chase pack gets a complete reset.
Riverside received six first place votes from coaches. College of San Mateo had four to move up to No. 2, following a 42-10 win over American River (which fell from No. 5 to 11). No. 3 Saddleback and No. 6 Cerritos each received a No. 1 nod.
Last week's top nine teams all faced unbeaten foes, including a trio of meetings in the north between squads in those ranks. Surviving in that group, in addition to CSM, were No. 7 Modesto, 23-20 over visiting No. 8 San Francisco, and No. 9 Fresno, 13-10 at No. 2 Butte. Modesto and Fresno share the No. 4 position this week. In the SoCal match-ups of National (state championship) Division vs. American Division unbeaten teams, Riverside outscored then No. 19 San Bernardino Valley, 58-37; Saddleback downed Pasadena, 53-28; No. 11 Ventura defeated co-No. 19 Allan Hancock, 35-14. No. 6 Mt. San Antonio, however, fell to No. 22 Chaffey, 24-22. Chaffey gave the American Division it's top win. This week Ventura is No. 8, Chaffey No. 20, and Mt. SAC No. 18.
LEAGUE PLAY BEGINS IN NCFC AMERICAN: League play gets underway Saturday in the Northern California Football Conference's American Division. Golden Coast openers include Cabrillo at Hartnell, Gavilan at Monterey Peninsula, and San Jose at Merced. In the Pacific League, Yuba plays at Los Medanos and Redwoods at Contra Costa. Non-league: #19 Reedley at Foothill.
TOP NCFC NON-LEAGUE CONTESTS SATURDAY (includes 6 of state's top 11 clashing): #2 San Mateo at co#4 Fresno, co#4 Modesto at #11 American River, #7 Butte at #10 San Francisco. Also: #15 Laney at West Hills, Sacramento at # 17 Shasta, Sierra at #24 Diablo Valley, Santa Rosa at #25 Sequoias.
