PAYNE'S PICK-SIX PROVIDES PERFECT ENDING
Oh, they didn’t need it to win, but former Antioch High football star Ryan Payne added the cherry on the cake with a 40-yard Pick-Six on the game’s final play, capping DVC’s 41-21 triumph over host Feather River on Saturday.
After a long, and temporarily stalled, bus trip to Quincy in rural Plumas County, the Vikings didn’t have time to properly warm up, which explained their slow start.
They led just 11-7 at halftime and then reeled off 24 straight points in the third quarter, courtesy of a Desmond Nisby 8-yard scoring run; Christian Fuca 27-yard TD reception from Jadon Brisendine; Manny Lopez 43-yard field goal; and a 17-yard Marquese Surrell TD catch.
DVC (3-1), which has won three in a row after a heartbreaking opening 23-20 loss to American River, will host San Joaquin Delta (1-3) on Friday night at 7.
Then comes the biggie – an Oct. 14 date with City College of San Francisco, ranked No. 2 in Northern California, at Viking Stadium to open play in the National-Bay 6.
Feather River (0-4) rallied with back-to-back touchdowns in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 35-21, but the freshman Payne’s climactic interception return sent the Vikings home happy.
Brisendine, a freshman transfer from Humboldt State, continued his steady play, completing 17 of 27 attempts for 204 yards and three touchdowns.
Nisby gained 71 yards on 17 carries, and former Clayton Valley Charter star Miles Harrison made the most of his four carries, gaining 40 yards. Surrell, Brisendine’s top target, had his fourth 100-plus yard receiving game with 10 catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Surrell is tied for first in the state with seven touchdown receptions and is No. 2 in receiving yards per game with 146.3. He is also tied for first with 40 catches.
Sophomore Kory Lamberts of Alhambra led the balanced defense with seven total tackles, and Ville Valasti had a monster game with three tackles for losses, including two sacks. Peter Moa also had a sack, and Daron Bowles had an interception.
Despite being held without a sack, Dylan Gilfoy still leads the state with 7.5 sacks.
