DVC Around the Horn
The impressive pass-catch combination of Jadon Brisendine and Marquese Surrell was on display again in DVC's 44-28 win over Sequoias Friday night at Viking Stadium.
Brisendine was 19-for-32 passing for 252 yards and four touchdowns, and Surrell had another massive game with three TD catches and 185 yards receiving. He ranks second in the state in average receiving yards per game at 156.7.
The Vikings (2-1), ranked eighth in the CCC Regional State Poll, will seek their third straight win at Feather River on Saturday. DVC opened the 2015 season with a 45-14 win at Feather River.
Overall, it was a mixed bag on Friday night for coach Mike Darr.
"Jadon had a real good game, and I think the offense in general put up a lot of yards," Darr said. "We were a little sloppy at times. We had some lulls, but wins are a little hard to come by, so it was still nice to beat an undefeated team. But we still have some improving to do."
After Sequoias (2-1) trimmed a 20-point deficit to six points, the Vikings locked it up by scoring the game's final 10 points, on a 34-yard Manny Lopez field goal and a 59-yard TD reception by Surrell.
Devin Hope (76 yards, TD), Desmond Nisby (67 yards) and Miles Harrison (44 yards) also ran well.
Brenton Allen led the defense with seven total tackles, and Marcus de la Pena and Ville Valasti had six tackles.
State sack leader Dylan Gilfoy had 2.5 more sacks, bringing his three-game total to 7.5.
WATER POLO
The DVC men's team, under first-year head coach Zach Roberts, is coming off a busy and successful weekend in Stockton. The Vikings had a 5-1 record, including notable wins over Big 8 opponents San Joaquin Delta, 17-13, and Santa Rosa, 14-6.
The Vikings will host Sierra on Wednesday in their second Big 8 match of the season. The DVC women’s team downed the Modesto 10-5 on Sept. 14, and the DVC men were led by a stout defense in a 15-3 triumph.
The women’s team (2-3, 1-0) will travel to Cabrillo this weekend for the Bockman Memorial Tournament. The Vikings are slated for a rematch against Allan Hancock, which DVC defeated 8-6 behind three goals by Julia Mes.
The men’s team (6-1) will face stout competition at San Luis Obispo and Cuesta this weekend. On Thursday, the Vikings will meet LA Valley College. On Friday, DVC will meet defending CCCAA State Champion Long Beach City and Riverside. On Saturday the Vikings will meet American River and Cuesta.
CROSS COUNTRY
With three women out either sick or injured, DVC needed someone to step up.
Ariana Corwin answered the call at the Pat Ryan Invitational.
“Ariana Corwin, she ran like a rock star,” an appreciative coach Shelly Pierson said.
The sophomore had an excellent fourth-place finish in the women’s 5K race in a course PR of 20 minutes, 25.8 seconds. She was just 30 seconds behind winner Michelle Perez-Lopez of De Anza.
DVC’s Jessica Mendez finished 12th (21:27.4) and Holly Babcock was 35th (25:03.6).
The DVC men had a robust fourth-place team finish with 70 points in its four-mile event, led by two freshmen -- Sayed Opeyany (sixth, 21:53.1) and Ian Rider (eighth, 22:10.5).
In his first cross country race, Ota Ozmen, a competitive soccer player who has developed a love for distance running, had a stellar effort, taking 15th place in 22:33.3. Look out for Ozmen as the season unfolds. Returner Jules Ormen also cracked the top 20, placing 18th in 22:50.8. Kevin Orellana rounded out the DVC top five, taking 24th in 23:04.
