FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, ANYONE?
The Diablo Valley College football team will look to rebound from a tough defeat when it hosts College of San Mateo in the National Bay 6 Conference on Friday night at Viking Stadium.
The Vikings (4-4, 2-1) and Bulldogs (6-2, 2-1) are in a three-way tie with Santa Rosa (5-3, 2-1) for second place in the conference, each with two games left in the regular season.
First-place City College of San Francisco (7-1, 3-0) handed Diablo Valley its first Bay 6 loss 44-7 on Saturday.
On a difficult afternoon in San Francisco, the Vikings' defense battled effectively overall.
Marquis Davenport of Hercules had two interceptions and a team-high eight total tackles, and Thompson Pulu of Hayward had one interception. Pulu, Franklin Uesi of College Park and Kory Lamberts of Alhambra each had sacks. Marcus de la Pena of San Ramon Valley had seven total tackles.
Kyle Trego of Liberty led the Vikings in solo tackles with four. He and Yamvo Teague of Berkeley each had six total tackles.
State-leading quarterback Drew Anderson of Miramonte was 22 for 42 for 256 yards passing with five interceptions, including two pick-sixes, and two fumbles. Speedster Nick West of Liberty scored the Vikings' lone touchdown on a 69-yard reception from the strong-armed Anderson.
Slot man CJ Cornwell of California had eight receptions for 82 yards.
Interestingly, the DVC-CSM showdown will pit the Vikings' high-volume passing attack against the Bulldogs stingy passing defense. Anderson leads the state in average passing yards with 356.5 a game, and in touchdown passes, with 28. But CSM leads in passing defense, allowing just 137.0.
The Vikings resilient defense will be tested by CSM's state team-leading rushing offense, averaging 255.1 yards a game.
Cornwell leads the state by a wide margin in total receptions with 82, and Marcus Amstrong-Brown of Justin-Siena, a returning all-conference selection, and West have 82 receptions combined.
DVC will finish the regular season at Santa Rosa on Nov. 14 as it completes a difficult three-game stretch against Bay 6 power brokers.
Friday's game vs. College of San Mateo will broadcasted live over the internet, please look at the DVC Athletics webpage for info on the broadcast.
