Goldman is king of the court in Big 8 North
The Diablo Valley men's and women's tennis teams walked away with three titles in the Big 8 North Conference Championships in Santa Rosa.
Garrett Goldman won the Men's Singles championship, and he teamed with Mariano Salvador to claim Men's Doubles title.
Seila Besirovic and Kristina Lencesova won the Women's Doubles title.
The No. 3 seeded DVC men's team will host No. 6 Fresno at 2 p.m. on Tuesday in the CCCAA Team Tennis Regional Tournament. With a victory, the Vikings would face either No. 8 Santa Rosa or No. 2 Foothill in the semifinals. The match would be held at the higher seed.
The CCCAA State Tennis Championships are April 20-24 in Ojai/Ventura/Oxnard. Four DVC women's players and six men have qualified for the state tourney.
TRACK AND FIELD
Nigel Burnett was first overall in the men's 100 meters at the Chabot Invitational with a personal best time of 10.91 seconds.
Austin Harper of El Cerrito was also first overall in the 200 with a best of 22.08, and Latrell Thayer was a close third with a season best of 22.13. Campolindo graduate Tyrone Yanaga ran a season best of 59.62 in the 400 hurdles.
The DVC men's 4x100 relay of Thayer, Jacob Demaio, Burnett and Lionel White placed first overall in a season best of 41.43, which ranks No. 3 in Northern California.
Corey Gilbert of Pittsburg was second overall in the shot put with a mark of 45.26 feet.
In women's action, Tia Harper of Deer Valley was third overall in the women's 400 with a personal best of 59.05, No. 2 all time at DVC. Katie Embody was second in the 5,000 in a personal best of 19:41.93.
Strangenae Campbell of Pinole Valley continued her impressive first season with an eighth-place overall finish in the 200 at the elite Stanford Invitational in 24.28.
SOFTBALL
The Vikings (20-8-1, 5-6 Big 8) will look to snap a three-game losing streak at home against Modesto (4-23, 0-11) at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
DVC is coming off a heartbreaking 5-4 loss at powerful Cosumnes River (24-6, 8-3). The hosts scored twice in the bottom of the seventh courtesy of two hits and two DVC errors.
The Vikings will travel to first place Sacramento City on April 9, an opponent that beat the Vikings 5-0 in their conference opener in Pleasant Hill.
BASEBALL
The Vikings continue to struggle in the powerful Big 8, having fallen into a tie for last place with four straight defeats.
Left fielder Drew Downing was 3 for 5 with an RBI in a 10-4 loss at San Joaquin Delta on April 2. Catcher Adam Remotto, designated hitter John Anthon and third baseman Cody Hazell each had two hits for DVC.
The Vikings (12-13, 2-8) will host Delta (20-5, 6-4) at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and the teams will complete the three-game set on Thursday.
