DVC Around the Horn: It's a pool party
The weeks happening at DVC
The powerful Diablo Valley men's and women's swimming teams swept a home dual meet against Las Positas on Friday.
The women prevailed 102-76, and the men won 115-71.
Brilliant Brandon James won the men's 100 backstroke by more than five seconds in a time of 52.03. James also won the 200 freestyle in 1:44.75, in a close race against LPC star RJ Scott.
The Vikings men won a hotly contested 200 medley relay in 1:36.26, with a team of James, Ryan Nip, Jacob Frigard and Jeremy Peris.
Malia Dillon won the women's 50 free in 25.24 and 100 free in 56.95. Alyssa Jenkins won a thriller over LPC's Claire Piazza in the 200 IM in 2:26.49. Christine Nip dominated the 100 yard breaststroke race, prevailing by more than five seconds in 1:12.27.
Frigard won the men's 50 free in 21.57. DVC swept top three spots in the men's 100 free: Peris (49.40), Garrett Middleton (50.06) and Kirill Parshan (50.16).
DVC's men's and women's teams also swept the top spots in the 200 free relay.
TRACK AND FIELD
Freshman Strangenae Campbell ran the fastest time in the state in the women's 100 meters at the ARC Invitational last week. She shattered her own school record with an 11.42.
"She ran a rocket. That time's fast," DVC coach Kyle Whitmore said.
Earlier this season, Campbell ran 11.74 to shatter a 27-year-old school mark (12.16). Campbell is also ranked No. 2 in the state in the 200 (24.04), behind Najia Hudspeth of Cerritos (23.90).
But Campbell wasn't the only DVC star at the ARC Invite.

Freshman Geoffrey Weseman remained unbeaten in the men's 800 (1:56.40), overcoming a tough field that included two men with faster times than him this season.

Nigel Burnett had a personal best of 10.97 in the 100.

Ryan Hoffman ran a strong 48.62 in the 400, putting him eighth on the all-time Top-10 list at DVC.

Francisco Hurtado had a season best in the 400 hurdles (54.79), finishing second.

The men's 4x400 relay (Isaiah Mobley, Hoffman, Francisco Hurtado, Weseman) took fourth with a State 'A' Standard time of 3:17.84.

Petrice Beattie won a jump-off to finish second in the high jump (1.59 meters).

Basketball star Brandy Williams had the No. 3 mark all-time at DVC of 43-1 to take second in the shot put.
SOFTBALL
The Vikings entered the week in a tie with San Joaquin Delta for third place after the teams split a doubleheader at DVC on Friday.
The Big 8 race figures to be a cliffhanger to the end, with five teams having no more than eight losses overall: Sacramento City (19-5-1, 7-1), Cosumnes River (22-5, 6-2), DVC (21-5-1, 5-3), Delta (17-8, 5-3), and Sierra (19-8, 4-4).
On Tuesday, DVC will host American River (16-10, 2-5), which is coming off back-to-back losses to Cosumnes River after a 5-2 win over Delta. The Vikings will then have a doubleheader at Cosumes River on Friday.
In the 3-1 win over Delta, Juliana Deighton and Kaitlyn VanMotman each had two hits and Julia Pelletier and Bailey Simmons had RBIs. Nicole Nordahl fired a four-hitter for her 21st win of the season.
BASEBALL
After back-to-back wins over American River, the Vikings fell 6-4 Cosumnes River on Saturday in the Big 8.
DVC (12-10, 2-5) will wrap up the three-game series against Cosumnes River (16-6, 3-4) on Tuesday and Thursday, both games at 2:30 p.m. at Viking Field.
In a 10-4 win over ARC, the Vikings amassed 15 hits and Billy Babb improved to 4-2, allowing two earned runs over five innings with four strikeouts and one walk. Bradley Gosiengfiao was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, a run scored and three stolen bases. He is tied for fourth in the state in stolen bases with 13.
Anthony Taliaferro also had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
In a 10-5 win over ARC, Zachary Guardino was 4 for 5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Taliaferro, Drew Downing and Gosiengfiao each had two hits. Andrew Cannedy (3-3) got the win, going six innings and allowing three earned runs with four strikeouts and two walks.
